Upcoming event: The Great Mughals – A talk by Susan Stronge
Our next event is a talk by Susan Stronge, Senior Curator of the highly acclaimed major V&A exhibition ‘The Great Mughals. Art, Architecture and Opulence.’
Her talk, with accompanying slides of the main exhibits, will cover the golden age of Mughal art that lasted from about 1580 to 1650 and spanned the reigns of three emperors: Akbar, Jahangir and Shah Jahan. Hindu and Muslim artists and craftsmen from the northern regions of the Indian subcontinent worked with Iranian masters in the masculine environment of the royal workshops. Their very different traditions were combined to produce a radically new, and rapidly evolving style of art. The Great Mughals includes some of the most famous Mughal paintings, manuscripts and objects as well as many previously unpublished artefacts, all revealing the extraordinary skills of the practitioners attached to the court.
Speaker bio: Susan Stronge recently retired as Senior Curator in the Asian Department of the Victoria & Albert Museum. She is now an Honorary Senior Research Fellow in the museum’s Research Department. She is a leading specialist in the arts of the Mughal empire, and the curator of the current major V&A exhibition The Great Mughals. Art, Architecture and Opulence.
Event date and time: Thursday 10 April, at 6pm for a strict 6.30pm start – 8pm (light refreshment will be available)
Venue: High Commission for Pakistan, 36 Lowndes Square, London SW1X 9JN
