Lubna Kerr’s tickbox 2′ in London

Posted: 24/10/2023

An event which may be of interest to our members

Actress, writer and comedian, Lubna Kerr,  known for her work in her Debut Comedy Show  ‘Where Are You Really From’, as well as BBC’s ‘Still Game’, ‘Scot Squad’ and ’Two Doors Down’ is bringing her play  ‘Tickbox 2’ to London.

Tickbox 2 is a semi-autobiographical one-woman play, in which Lubna details her parent’s move from a comfortable middle-class life in Lahore, Pakistan to a four-storey, one-bedroom flat in Govan in Glasgow in the late 1960s after her father was accepted to study a PhD at Strathclyde University. The play deals with the challenges they encountered with humour and emotion, from bereavement to balancing two cultures to explaining samosas to the casually racist neighbour.

Originally performed at Edinburgh Fringe, the play has received several 4-star reviews and two award nominations. Tickbox will be performed at Pleasance Theatre in Islington on the 27th and 28th of October

Here is a link to the tickets https://www.pleasance.co.uk/event/tickbox-2

Our Condolences for the Passing of Zia Mohyeddin

Posted: 13th February 2023

Upon hearing of the very sad passing of Zia Mohyeddin at the age of 91, the Pakistan Society
mourns the death of a true superstar of the performing arts. This modest man whose fame and
influence stretched far beyond Pakistan, and touched the lives of countless admirers across the
globe, was the special guest of the Pakistan Society at its annual dinner in September 2019, and
the first recipient of the Society’s Jinnah Medal. His speech on that occasion – a bravura
performance in both English and Urdu which included recitations from memory of his beloved
Shakespeare – held a large audience in thrall, at times doubled up in laughter and at others in
spellbound silence. The bard’s words come to mind at this time: To die, to sleep; to sleep:
perchance to dream: ay, there’s the rub; for in that sleep of death what dreams may come when
we have shuffled off this mortal coil, must give us pause. Let us pause and reflect and be
thankful for what this great man brought to us all. May he dream and charm into eternity.

In Memory of Professor Peter Meadows

Posted: 12th February 2023

We are saddened to advise the recent passing of Professor Peter Meadows, a life member of the Pakistan Society, and regular attender at its events (despite having to travel from Glasgow to be present) and a speaker at several of them. He devoted much of his life to the study of Pakistan, its geography, ethnography, ecology and environment, with a particular interest in the Hindu Kush. In recognition of this he and Azra, his wife, were the recipients in 2013 of the Pakistan Society Award. With his flowing white beard and scholarly appearance he was unmistakable in a crowd.

Professor Meadows was a fine man, full of learning, wisdom and compassion. With his death the Society salutes the passing of one of life’s gentlemen

Screening of the classic 1958 film JAGO HUA SAVERA (THE DAY SHALL DAWN)

Posted: 1st October 2022

The British Library as part of their India/Pakistan 75th anniversary programme, are screening a recently restored print of the classic1958 film JAGO HUA SAVERA (THE DAY SHALL DAWN).

The film will be shown on Sunday 23 October at the Curzon Bloomsbury.

A landmark film in Pakistani cinema, Jago Hua Savera depicts the struggles of fishermen in former East Pakistan, present-day Bangladesh. With accomplished filmmaker and documentarian A. J. Kardar at the helm, one of Pakistan’s greatest poets Faiz Ahmed Faiz penning the script, and British Free Cinema stalwarts such as Walter Lassally behind the camera, it is no surprise that Jago Hua Savera quickly cemented itself within the Pakistani canon, winning a Golden Medal at the 1959 Moscow International Film Festival and being Pakistan’s first submission to the Academy Awards. Don’t miss the chance to see this iconic film in Curzon Bloomsbury’s beautiful Renoir Screen!
